As business leaders, we have the opportunity to impact not only the companies we lead, but also the communities in which we live and work.

Elder care… We will all have to manage it at some point for a parent, an older sibling, a funny aunt, in-laws or ourselves. Few of us think about it until we have to face it. Then by the time we figure out how to do it, we have to rely on other people to actually make it happen.

There are general considerations such as assisted living, proactive health, and taking the car keys away, as well as more serious issues such as debilitating illnesses, home health care, hospice and death.

Then there are cognitive diseases, including Alzheimer’s and dementia… Any of us who have had to care for a loved one on that journey have been forced to navigate this devastating process alone, with little guidance or support.

What if we could change that?

We may not be able to stop the aging process (although we have members who are working on it); We may not be able to cure Alzheimer’s or dementia (although we have members working on that too); but I do believe that by combining the resources and leadership of the mid-market, we can provide access to expertise and resources that helps the patient, supports the caregivers, and makes the worst of this just a little easier for everyone.

To that end, today, as CEO of CEO Connection, I am forming a task force of mid-market CEOs to create access for CEO Connection members, their families, and their employees who are facing an elder care situation or are impacted by Alzheimer’s or dementia to resources they cannot get on their own that will:

  • Enhance their ability to understand and manage elder care challenges,
  • Find and access quality elder care and support services,
  • Connect with leading experts and innovative treatments for Alzheimer’s and dementia, and
  • Navigate the emotional and practical realities that come with caring for an aging loved one.

Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world….”

Imagine what the leadership of the mid-market can do together.
